June 20, 2004 ~ Flipper Wave

Salt Spring Seal Patricia Parkes does the flipper wave to greet a crowd of on-lookers. Salt Spring’s group of fifteen open-water women swimmers had just completed a crossing from Crofton to Vesuvius as a benefit event for the Natural Care Wildlife Centre on the Island.
The Seals have been swimming together year-round, almost daily, for about three years.

Sharon Schermbrucker conducts a concert of Saturna women singers on the patio of the General Store Café. Lois Buttery plays the piano. The concert followed a series of workshops given by weekender Sharon to those who love to sing and wanted more skills.
Spring 2004 ~ Andrew Lewis in the SmartCar

Federal Green Party candidate Andrew Lewis tries a enviro-friendly SmartCar during a promotion of the vehicle on Salt Spring by Victoria’s Three Point Motors.
Salt Spring resident, landscape architect Lewis was a candidate for Saanich-Gulf Islands in the April election. While not elected, he won 16.7% of the vote riding-wide and 33.9% of the vote on the Southern Gulf Islands.

February 22, 2004 ~ Pender Museum Gets a Home

Florence and Dave Davidson, former owners of ‘Roesland’ (now part of the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve), cut the cake at a celebration ceremony marking an agreement between Parks Canada and Pender Museum Society to establish a museum in the heritage Robert Roe house on the property. The gathering took place in the Pender Library meeting room.

December 4, 2004 ~ Birding at Hope Bay Wharf, Pender Island

Ladysmith’s Bruce Whittington (centre) leads a birding walk in the rain after giving a slideshow the previous evening. Event organizer Jan Kirkby is in the green jacket. Hope Bay proved too wet even for the birds, so the group travelled to Magic Lake to look at waterfowl.
